Archivists used to prepare Research Notes for public customers, to assist with research on a specific topic. They can be a good source of references when the catalogue or topic sheets have not been able to help.

Research Notes can contain:

  • newspaper articles about historical subjects
  • letters to members of the public from the South Australian Archives (now State Records of South Australia)
  • answering research questions
  • brochures from other organisations
  • chronologies
  • biographies, etc.

The Notes can be found in the State Records Research Centre.

Most Notes were compiled by George Pitt, the first archivist of the South Australian Archives, to assist researchers interested in South Australian or Northern Territory history. Additional material has been added by staff or submitted by researchers from time to time.

The range of topics covered by the Notes varies widely and includes:

  • Aborigines
  • Expeditions
  • Theatres and
  • Yorke Peninsula.

No further Research Notes are being added to this series - we now focus on the preparation of indexes , topic sheets, and the providing online records.

Indexes

Subject Index to Research Notes, A - Z (GRG 56/79) is indexed by the subject of each Research Note, and contains a brief description of the contents of each note and its number.
