We hold the major correspondence series of the Sheriff's Office, which was later the Prisons Department, and eventually the Department for Correctional Services (GRG54/1).

This series covers a range of administrative matters handled by the Sheriff or the administrator of gaols and prisons, including some employee matters.

Very few files exist between 1867 and 1881.

We also hold records relating to Gaols and Prisons.

Access conditions

Records of gaols and prisons are typically available for general public access after between 60 and 100 years, depending on the level of information about prisoners.

Indexes

Sherriff's Office correspondence 1867 - 1910

These indexes are divided into four sequences and cover the years 1867 - 1910. Incoming correspondence was organised into files, which relate to one particular subject or individual. Documents received over a number of years may have been placed in the same file. File covers may be annotated with the file numbers of related files.

The indexes are arranged by year and then alphabetically by subject/author of the letter, and contain the:

  • subject index term
  • description of the contents of the file, and
  • date of the letter and its file number.
