Formation of the Aboriginal Reference Group was inspired by the Tandanya Declaration.

In 2021, State Records of South Australia and the State Library of South Australia partnered to establish the Aboriginal Reference Group. Following a successful call for expressions of interest for members across the South Australian community, the inaugural meeting was held in March 2022. This important forum enables both organisations to collaborate on programs and services related to Aboriginal people and culture, and to consult on opportunities for enhancing access and availability of archival materials.

A new membership term commenced from May 2025.
