In the absence of state-based privacy legislation and recognising the need for agencies, local governments and universities to have guidance relating to personal information privacy, State Records has developed the Information Privacy Strategy.

The Strategy promotes personal information privacy to be respected and proactively managed in a consistent framework that aligns with best practice.

It provides a principles-based approach to proactively managing the privacy of personal information collected, held and used by South Australian government agencies, local governments and universities.

It also introduces the concept of a Personal Information Privacy Management Framework (Framework) that agencies need to develop to protect the personal information held by the agency.

Protecting Personal Information - the Privacy Fundamentals

Underpinning the Strategy, State Records has also developed Protecting Personal Information - the Privacy Fundamentals.  The Fundamentals provides practical guidance on how an agency can develop a Framework.

Reflecting best practice, it will help ensure a consistent, well governed approach to the management of personal information.

Coming soon

In addition to the Strategy and the Fundamentals, State Records is in the process of developing some other complementary resources that will be released in 2023-24.  These include:

  • Online training modules:
    • Handling Personal Information
    • An overview of the IPPI
    • How to conduct a PIA
  • A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) Guideline – developed to assist agencies to successfully conduct and navigate undertaking PIAs.
  • A Privacy Self-Assessment Tool – to allow agencies to self-assess the maturity of their privacy practices within the agency and identify areas for improvement.
