The State Records Council of South Australia is established under the State Records Act, 1997.
The State Records Council consists of nine members who broadly represent State and Local Government, the Judiciary, Business, Professional Records Managers and Archivists, the Historical Community and Aboriginal People.
The Council has two major functions:
- approve disposal determinations for official records
- provide advice to the Minister responsible for the State Records Act or the Director of State Records with respect to policies relating to records management or access to official records.
The current State Records Council has been appointed until 28 January 2020.
Members of the State Records Council
Helen Onopko, Records Management Consultant, as a person eligible for membership of the Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia.
Vacant, a person nominated by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Robert Foster, Associate Professor of History, as a historian nominated by the Minister to whom the administration of the History Trust of South Australia Act, 1981 is committed.
Tony Leviston, Consultant, as a person with practical business experience.
Susan Marsden, Historian, as a person who, as a member of the public, makes use of official records in the custody of State Records for research purposes.
Heather Merritt, Councillor for City of Onkaparinga, as a person with experience in local government nominated by the Local Government Association of South Australia.
Keith Nicholas, Senior Records Officer, Science and Information Group, Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, as a chief executive of an agency nominated by the Commissioner for Public Employment, or a delegate of the chief executive.
Natasha Sumner, as an Aboriginal person engaged in historical research involving the use of official records, nominated by the Executive Director of the Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division, Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
Ian Sutherland, Archival Consultant, as a person eligible for professional membership of the Australian Society of Archivists.
Any business for Council should be referred in the first instance to the Executive Officer, State Records Council.
State Records Council Meetings
The State Records Council is required to meet at least once every three months and at any other time required by the Minister. The calendar of coming State Records Council meetings includes the due dates for papers and details of preceding Internal Disposal meetings.
Internal Disposal meetings are held prior to each Council meeting to fulfil State Records' function of making determinations as to the disposal of official records. Determinations are then presented to Council for approval.
