Index to the 1841 census returns
The census taken in January 1841 was the earliest information collated about the number of residents in South Australia. The returns give name of head of household and indicates the number of males and females in that household, categorised by age group. In some cases the names of others in the household are also given.
The returns are arranged into geographical sections. The original arrangement of the returns is not exactly known however an attempt has been made to restore the returns to an approximate of original order, as indicated by available evidence.
Note: The 1841 census is the only one for which State Records holds the returns. All later census returns were destroyed following the compilation of the required statistical reports.
The index is arranged alphabetically by the name of the person on the return and also includes the page number for that sheet.
