The Lands Department Research Notes are available at the Gepps Cross Research Centre. An index is available at both Research Centres.

Description GRG 35/584

The notes were compiled in the Chief Draftsman's Office during the 1940s to 1970s. They provide information on early purchasers and lessees of land and are arranged alphabetically by the name of the location.

The research notes may include all or some of the following details:

  • nomenclature
  • dates and brief history of the survey, proclamation and settlement of an area [see Example 1]
  • names of original and/or subsequent proprietors of land in the form of sections, allotments, occupation licences and/or leases
  • numbers of sections, pastoral leases or allotments in a given area
  • longitude and latitude of a location
  • purchase price of land in a particular area
  • maps and plans [see Example 2]
  • South Australian Government Gazette references relevant to a particular location
  • transcripts of survey reports made by the Surveyor General's Office.
