Description GRG 28/5

GRG 28/5 - Register of Admissions to the Destitute Asylum, 1870-1873, 1881-1924 contains some or all the following information:

  1. Name
  2. Age
  3. Residence
  4. No. of Children
  5. How Long in Colony
  6. Ship of arrival
  7. Trade
  8. Year of Application
  9. Page of Entry [or entry no. if page not numbered]
  10. Nationality.

Earlier date ranges of GRG 28/5 are available on microfilm at both Research Centres.

State Records holds a number of series relating to destitute persons and welfare recipients in the following Government Records Groups:

  • GRG 28 - Destitute Persons Department (1849-1927 [with gaps])
  • GRG 27 - State Children's Department (1862-1929 [with gaps])
  • GRG 29 - Social Welfare Department (1867-1979 [with gaps]).

Record series which contain personal information about individuals may have access restrictions. Please seek advice from Research Centre staff about obtaining permission from the relevant government agency to view records with access restrictions.
