Records of Members of Parliament

State Records of South Australia is the principal repository for official records created by State and Local Government. These records reflect the operation of Government in South Australia dating back to 1836.

To enhance and support its primary holdings of official records, State Records also selectively collects records created by members of parliament as part of their elected role. Such records provide a more personal account of the workings of the Government of the day, particularly at the higher echelons of Government.

State Records collection of parliamentarian records also complements the collecting activities of other archival institutions interested in South Australian records.

Ephemera, publications and personal papers that are not working papers of members of parliament are collected by the State Library of South Australia.

The National Archives of Australia selectively collects Ministerial and Federal politician records.

Framework for Collection of Parliamentary Records

State Records has developed a documentation suite that provides a policy framework for its collection of records created by past and present members of parliament. This includes:

  • a collection strategy
  • a collection policy that sets out the principles by which State Records accepts parliamentarian records, and
  • an information kit for members of parliament (or a representative on their behalf) that includes guidelines for managing, identifying and transferring records of significance.
