Sheriff's Office correspondence

Correspondence files - Sheriff's Office 1867 - 1910

This is the major correspondence series of the Sheriff's Office, later Prisons Department and covers the years 1867 - 1978.  Correspondence files consist of letters and other documents received by the Department, memoranda of action taken, internal reports or inquiries, and usually either brief notes outlining the reply (nineteenth century), or copies of letters sent (twentieth century). A correspondence file generally only relates to one particular subject or individual, but documents received over a number of years may be the placed in the same file. The file cover may be annotated with the file numbers of related files.

Note: Very few files exist between 1867-1881.

The Special Lists for this series are arranged into four sequences and cover the years 1867 - 1910.

The lists are arranged by year and then alphabetically by subject/author of the letter. The Lists contains a subject index term, a description of the contents of the file, the date of the letter and its file number.
